Suspicious Item at Tawa Service Station
At approximately 21:40 on Saturday evening, employees of a Tawa Service Station on the corner of Main Rd and Tawa St alerted Police to a suspicious device located within the confines of the service station area. The device comprissed of several electrical wires.
Police attended the scene to access the item and based on what was located it was decided to highten the risk level.
As a precautionary measure Fire service were put on stand by and sent several appliances to a nearby area. The NZ Defence Explosive Ordnance Disposal Squadron (EOD Sqd) were requested and deployed to the scene.
Traffic was closed to parts of Tawa St, Main Rd and The Drive.
Tranz metro stopped all trains between Takapu Rd and Porirua as the tracks run through the area of concern.
The headmaster of Tawa College made the school hall available should near by residents require to be evacuated.
At approximately 1:50am this morning the NZ Defence EOD Sqd deconstructed the device at the scene and confirmed it was not explosive.
