Police dismayed with results of early morning check points
Auckland Motorways Police are dismayed with the choices made by some Auckland drivers who continue to drive after
consuming alcohol or drugs.
Early morning alcohol check points identified five drivers on the motorway who had exceeded the legal alcohol limit and
identified another impaired by drugs.
The driver of one vehicle stopped earlier in the evening exceeded the legal alcohol limit and the vehicle keys were
removed. The same vehicle was stopped a second time a short time later after a passenger hot wired the vehicle and
continued driving it. This second driver was also exceeding the legal alcohol limit. A further passenger from the same
vehicle then took it upon himself to damage a police vehicle and he was arrested.
A vehicle collision near Drury was caused by fatigue after the driver fell asleep and collided with the central crash
barrier.
The Police would like to reinforce to drivers of the need to remain sober, reduce their speed and not drive when tired.
