Upper Hutt weighs in on Basin Reserve transport debate
Wayne Guppy, Mayor of Upper Hutt asks the parties to consider the regional effects of their decision making.
UPPER HUTT, Wellington NZ, 21 DEC 2012—Upper Hutt Mayor, Wayne Guppy today asked for careful consideration from
Wellington City Council after its decision on Wednesday night to investigate alternatives to the previously supported
flyover option for the Basin Reserve.
Calling for calm from both the City Council and NZTA, Mr Guppy stressed that the process would affect the entire region
from Kapiti across to Masterton. “At the heart of this debate is the easing of traffic congestion to and from Wellington
Airport,” said Mr Guppy. “But this is an amenity that is utilized by an entire region, therefore a regional approach
should be taken in this debate.”
Mr Guppy raised concerns about NZTA potentially dropping other projects in the city if the Flyover was not to go ahead.
“Ultimately, Wellington City councillors have to make their own minds up about what they choose to do. All I’m asking is
that they consider the rest of the region when making their decision and that they do so in a timely manner. Any loss of
proposed transport spending for the city would have an adverse effect on the entire region because of our interwoven
commuting patterns, and of particular concern is the significant issue facing the heavily congested route to and from
the airport.”
