New work completed on Hawke’s Bay Trails
Sections of the Hawke’s Bay Trails which have been under construction in recent weeks are opening in time for the holiday period.
Water Ride
The lower Taipo Stream section of the Water Ride will be opened today (Friday 21 December).
Hawke’s Bay Regional Council has been reconstructing the stopbank and laying lime sand on this length of the Hawke’s Bay Trails over the last few weeks, and gates to this section have been locked. This approximately 2km section runs from the Prebensen Drive's "bridge to nowhere" down to the Ahuriri Estuary. HBRC reminds users that this is a pedestrian and cyclist only trail, so dogs, horses, motorbikes, motor vehicles are prohibited as the pathway crosses farmland.
Further north, the new Bay View State Highway road crossing is nearing completion, and Napier City Council aims to have this ready for use this weekend.
This new median island provides a safer crossing for cyclists and pedestrians. It links to a new concrete pathway laid from Onehunga Road alongside the highway, across the railway line to Ferguson Street South. This links the Bay View to Westshore concrete pathway to the Bay View to Ahuriri lime sand pathway.
Landscapes Ride
The lime sand pathway on the Landscapes ride in Havelock North between Havelock Road and Crosses Road adjacent to the Karamu Stream (Hastings side) is more or less complete.
HBRC advises that the trail is usable but cyclists and walkers need to take care using the concrete ramp which slopes and curves under the bridge. A safety handrail was not able to be installed in time for the holidays and will be done early in the new year.
