Christchurch-West Melton Zone Committee Meeting looking at Zone Implementation Programme
The Christchurch-West Melton Zone Committee – set up as part of the collaborative Canterbury Water Management Strategy –
is meeting on Wednesday 28 November.
The main focus at the meeting will be for the committee to finalise its draft Christchurch-West Melton Zone
Implementation Programme (ZIP) for water management.
The draft ZIP brings together the committee’s recommendations for water management in the zone to achieve the goals and
targets set out in the Canterbury Water Management Strategy (CWMS).
Public feedback meetings are scheduled for December 2012 and January 2013 to give locals a chance to provide feedback on
the recommendations in the draft ZIP.
Once local feedback has been processed a final version of the ZIP will be presented to councils to form the basis for
the design and realignment of water management work programmes.
The vision of the CWMS is to enable future generations the greatest social, economic, recreational, cultural benefits
from our water resources within a sustainable framework.
The committee will also discuss a report from the Waimakariri River Working Group’s meeting in September. The Working
Group includes members from the Waimakariri, Selwyn-Waihora, and Christchurch-West Melton zone committees.
In September the Working Group began developing a common understanding of the underlying cultural, science and planning
aspects of the Waimakariri River. Committee representatives shared their priority outcomes and recommendations for the
river, and identified additional areas that need to be covered by the committees, and areas that could be in conflict
within water management zone implementation programmes. The group will meet again in early December.
