Witnesses to fatal crash sought
At 2.16 pm Monday 26 November 2012 police were alerted to a crash between a south bound Nissan car and two oncoming motorcycles on the Lindis Pass near Goodger Road, SH 8, approximately 20 km north of Tarris.
The male riders of the motorcycles died at the scene and the female pillion on one of the motorcycles was flown to Dunedin Hospital by helicopter in a critical condition.
The single occupant in the car was taken to hospital by ambulance.
The two motorcyclists were travelling as part of a group. Victim support have been assisting the police dealing with the group.
SH 8 was closed whilst the injured were treated and serious crash investigators examined the scene. The road has since been cleared and was reopened around 6.45pm.
Cromwell Police wish to thank members of the public who stopped at the crash and assisted at the scene, including a group of doctors who were instrumental in treating the survivors.
Anyone who assisted at the scene who has not yet been spoken to by police is asked to contact the Cromwell Police.
Cromwell police are investigating the cause of this crash and are seeking witnesses who were travelling in the area at the time.
The police are interested in sightings of a dark coloured Nissan Pulsar that was travelling south from Omarama towards Cromwell.
The Nissan is known to have been following a white station wagon in a line of traffic shortly before the crash and police are keen to speak to occupants of this white station wagon.
The police are also interested in the movements of a group of around eight motorcyclists who were travelling north towards Omarama. These motorcyclists were riding large Harley Davidson motorcycles.
