New exhibition space opens on Lyall Bay Waterfront
A new boutique gallery on Wellingtons south coast promises to showcase and celebrate New Zealand creativity.
Number 5 studio, located at 5 Lyall Parade, Lyall Bay, Wellington, opens to the public on November 17 with an exhibition
of artworks by three talented emerging artists: Mia Hamilton (Wellington), Tony Harrington (Hawkes Bay) and John Shewry
(Taranaki).
The space has been set up in conjunction with the New Zealand Art Show, the organisation behind New Zealands largest
annual 3-day art show, and will exhibit many artists who have exhibited at the show.
Carla Russell, the director of number 5 studio, says that the space is perfectly suited for exhibitions. “It may seem
small, but it has a lovely light and airy feel to it. And the current exhibition looks spectacular.”
Striking pieces from Taranaki artist John Shewry reveal a deep social consciousness and they loudly and proudly proclaim
his connection with heartland New Zealand through humourous and inventive use of iconic kiwiana materials.
Mia Hamilton, mixed media artist from Wellington, is displaying a number of delicate ceramics and small but sturdy
bronzes, while the artwork of Hawkes Bay artist Tony Harrington combines Maori art influences, recycled materials and
contemporary design.
The space is also the new headquarters for the administration of the New Zealand Art Show: they were previously based in
the historic Harcourts Building on Lambton Quay.
Of the new site, Russell couldnt be happier. “Its cosy, fresh and ideal for our purposes and we are fortunate to be a
part of a thriving community: Maranui café, Elements café, Seaview takeaways with the best chips in town, the burger
caravan on the beach, Swell creative studios, Diamond Deli, the active surfing and surf-life saving community plus the
multitude of artistic people who live in and visit the area.
“We are also looking forward to involving the community on small creative projects: we believe theres great potential to
engage with local creative groups”.
