Prime Cattle Competition Results
A 1050 kilogram beast took out first place as the Heaviest Steer in the Prime Cattle Competition held Tuesday at the North Canterbury Stock and Station Agents Association weekly Canterbury Agricultural Park prime market.
Ben Manson’s steer easily bet last year’s winner by topping the one tonne mark. He was sold for $1890.
Canterbury A Association President Richard Lemon presented the winner with their trophy and prize ribbon commenting that their steer’s size was quite impressive.
Organiser of the competition, John Honeybone from Rural Livestock commented on the excellent sale and the very good cattle on offer. “Overall the cattle were right up to expectations with some excellent cattle entered”, said Honeybone.

2011 Heaviest Steer Winner, Jack McDrury, will accompany dad John and 2010 winner, a Charolais and Friesian cross steer named Prince Charles, to this year’s Canterbury A Show. Charles weighed in at 1234kg when he won the competition and Showgoers can enter a competition to guess his current weight at the Show. Entry is by gold coin donation with the winner receiving a fishing charter trip for 12. All proceeds go to Abreast of Life, a group of breast cancer survivors living in Christchurch.
This year’s 150th Canterbury A Show will be held Wednesday 14 to Friday 16 November at Canterbury Agricultural Park in Christchurch. It is the largest A Show in the country attracting 100,000 people, close to 7000 livestock and feature competition entries and 600 trade exhibitors.
