Work Begins At Te Rapa Road/The Base Intersection

Work gets underway this evening to transform the Te Rapa Road/The Base roundabout on State Highway 1 into an
intersection controlled by traffic lights. To minimise disruption during the works, most of the activity will be carried
out at night outside of commuter traffic times and The Base’s normal operating hours. This will enable the current road
capacity of two lanes in each direction to be maintained most of the time, except during the overnight work period
between 9pm6am when traffic access will still be available in at least one lane in each direction. Hamilton City Council
City Development Manager, Andrew Parsons, says once complete the project will enable the intersection to better cope
with current and future traffic flows, as growth in this area is expected to continue. The project will also provide a
safer environment for cyclists and pedestrians.
“There has been extensive analysis of traffic flows at The Base roundabout including factoring in current and future
growth in the wider area. The roundabout has served traffic well in the past, but signals are now required to provide
better traffic management and better facilities for cyclists and pedestrians to get across a very busy road,” he says.
“We thank everyone for their patience while this work is carried out and ask that people take care when driving through
these road works.”
The majority of work is expected to be complete by December. Service relocations and other minor works have already been
carried out around the site in preparation for the main works to begin.
The $4.5 million project is being jointly funded between Tainui Group Holdings, Hamilton City Council and the NZ
Transport Agency.
Cambridge Construction Company has been contracted to carry out the works.
