New Batch Of Work For Pukete Section Of Wairere Drive

New embankment plantings and road surfacing improvements are among the latest work planned for the Pukete section of
Wairere Drive starting next week. Hamilton City Council City Development Manager Andrew Parsons says the planned work,
starting on Monday, 27 August, is a vital phase of the four-laning of Wairere Drive between the Pukete Bridge and Pukete
Road.
The work requires the reduction of the westbound traffic lanes to a single lane for up to eight weeks (weather
permitting), along with similar arrangements for the eastbound traffic lane on occasions. The work is being done now to
take advantage of improving weather.
“This work includes construction of a new noise-reduction fence and footpath along a section of the southern side of the
road, planting on the southern embankment, and resurfacing the eastbound traffic lanes with a second chip-seal,” Mr
Parsons says.
Throughout the work a shared footpath/cycleway will be available to ensure a full range of travel choices for commuters
and residents. “Because of those traffic lane reductions, we’re urging motorists to be patient, stagger their travel
times, use alternative routes, use public transport or carpool with neighbours and colleagues.”
Mr Parsons says the work is weather-dependent, but once completed, the speed limit for the section will be raised back
up to 80 kmh. “The last piece of work for this part of the project will be in summer, when final smooth road surfacing
to reduce noise is done.”

Four-laning Wairere Drive is part of the $74 million Hamilton Ring Road project, which is scheduled for completion in
