Margaret Mahy remembered at Auckland Libraries
The celebrated works of one of New Zealand’s most loved children’s authors, Margaret Mahy, will be remembered with a
series of story telling events this Saturday.
Almost 30 Auckland Libraries will be hosting the story time sessions with celebrated guest authors and illustrators
reading the best of Mahy’s work. Guest authors include Maria Gill, Sally Sutton and Philip Simpson.
The Auckland Libraries’ events are part of a nationwide Margaret Mahy read, involving libraries and other venues from
the far north to the deep south.
“Margaret Mahy felt like one of the family to many readers, fellow writers, and the wider children's literature
community” said Anne Coppell, reference librarian at Auckland’s Central City Library. "She was a New Zealand icon,
officially, and in our hearts.”
Librarians have been impressed by the public interest in her work and the show of support from her peers, with entries
in condolence books in the Auckland Libraries showing how many lives she touched.
Hundreds of people turned out to the public memorial service held in Christchurch last week. Another public memorial
gathering is being hosted by the Storylines Children’s Literature Trust at the Auckland Town Hall from 2:30pm on
Saturday, 11 August.
