Council approves funds towards repairs of popular Sumner Café
The popular Poseidon Café in Sumner is one step closer to reopening today after Council approved $288,472 towards
repairs, to be funded by insurance proceeds.
Christchurch City Council Deputy Mayor Ngaire Button says she is delighted to have a decision that will mean a Sumner
business can move towards getting back up and running.
"The community will have more choice after losing a number of eateries as a result of earthquake damage. It will also
help reinvigorate Sumner attracting both tourists and local foot traffic back to a very special location."
She says that the venue was important to her personally as she had previously eaten lunch there, before it was called
the Poseidon Café, with her then fiancé. After lunch they climbed Cave Rock, where he proposed to her.
"I know that my story will be one of many from people who find this a wonderful place."
The building suffered minor damage as a result of the 22 February earthquake 2011 and additional damage from the 13 June
2011 earthquake event. While there is some damage to the timber floor, plaster cracking to walls and ceilings in
isolated locations, and a cracked timber pile, as a whole the building performed very well. It is designed and well
constructed to modern techniques. The building has no structural weaknesses and does not require earthquake
strengthening.
Work on the site is likely to begin within 10 working days. The date for reopening the venue is not yet known.
Poseidon Café is listed in the City Plan as a Group 3 building with heritage significance on the basis that the building
was constructed over a historic wharf structure.
The Council decision noted that this cost is not the full and final settlement.
