Winner Of Taupō District
Youth Community Spirit Award Announced
Hayley Martin of Taupō-nui-a-Tia College has been named as the winner of the TrustPower Taupō District Youth Community
Spirit Award.
Run in conjunction with the TrustPower Taupō District Community Awards, the TrustPower Youth Community Spirit Award
recognises secondary school students’ service to the school and the community. The Award is jointly run by TrustPower
and the Taupō District Council.
Local high schools were asked to recommend one student to be considered for the Award. The runner-up recipient for this
award is Cassandra Van Der Hulst of Tauhara College.
To be considered for the TrustPower Youth Community Spirit Award students had to have given service to school or
community projects, treated others with care and respect and been a good ambassador for the school and the Taupō region.
TrustPower Community Relations Representative Suzi Luff says Hayley is a generous and talented student who is passionate
about giving to her fellow students and her community.
“Hayley is a person who gets things done, and she has taken on many leadership roles using her natural ability to
inspire and organise others to achieve their common goals.
Within her school, Hayley has been captain of her hockey team for the past three years and she’s a rep on the student
council, ball committee and common room committee.
As the convenor of the cultural committee, her ability to lead others and show initiative has seen her involve plenty
of fellow students in various events within the school.
Out in the community, Hayley has coached 6 and 7 year olds for hockey, been a part of Girl Guides, helped with
Department of Conservation plantings and volunteered at local Ironman, Iron Kids and the Lake Taupō Cycle Challenge for
a number of years.
Hayley likes to get involved in the community because she’s forever grateful for the time that various volunteers,
coaches and leaders have given her along her way and she wants to return what she has received,” says Miss Luff.
For winning the Award, Hayley will receive a framed certificate and $500 prize money, with $250 going to Hayley
personally and $250 being given to a community group of her choice.
The TrustPower Youth Community Spirit Award will be presented at the TrustPower Taupō District Community Awards, being
held tonight, Monday 5 September, when Hayley will announce which community group will receive her $250 donation.
