Budding entrepreneurs become Stallholders for a day at Hill St Kids’ Market!
This Saturday 20 August, more than 20 junior chefs, growers & entrepreneurs will become Hill St Farmers’ Market stallholders for a day at the inaugural Hill St Kids’ Market. This free Visa Wellington on a Plate event will run from 8:30am-11:30am on Saturday 20 August in the middle of the normal Hill St Farmers’ Market in Hill St, Thorndon and everyone is welcome.
The 20 kids’ stalls, run by groups of children aged 5-12, will be selling vegetables, herbs, seedlings, eggs, aprons, lemonade, slices, cookies, preserves, cookie jars, teatowels, sweet treats, chocolate things, fresh pasta & sauces, toffee apples, savouries, spring bulbs and more – all grown or made by the kids. Prizes will be awarded for best baking, produce, stall presentation, customer service and marketing.
“It’s a great chance for kids to see exactly what’s involved in running a stall” says market Trustee, Hannah Grainer.
“They have to think through everything… from developing, growing or baking the products, deciding on a stall name, making signs, deciding prices and working out what will make their stall stand out. It’s a lovely fun way for kids to gain a practical understanding of food production and business basics!”
“It’s going to be fun, we’ll earn money and we’ll have a great time,” say Ella Freeman (age 6) and her sister Mia Freeman (age 8). “We’ve even learnt how to grow our own vegetables and herbs to sell to customers.”
There will be free face painting from 10-11am and the usual market stalls will be operating as well so people can pick up a coffee, a baguette or bacon buttie and farm fresh produce while supporting Wellington’s next generation of foodmakers and entrepreneurs.
Like the main Hill St Farmers’ Market, the Kids’ Market will operate whatever the weather. The normal Hill St Farmers’ Market
