There will be bargains for all when a new flea market opens in Flaxmere.
The market will be in operation each Saturday from the 27th August in the Flaxmere Centre, by the Library, and opposite
the homes on Caernarvon Drive.
The flea-market vendors are expected to range from a family who rent a stall to sell unwanted household items, to clubs
and organisations which will aim to raise money to run their programmes and events. There will be a range of items for
sale including fresh food, local craftwork and second hand goods.
Market organiser Arthur Heather says “it is something we have thought about for a while now and it’s great that we are
almost at the point of opening the doors for the first time. We have worked hard to set up the market, as a place where
all the people of Flaxmere can come to browse and buy while enjoying some great entertainment.”
Fellow organiser Moko Kavana from the Cook Islands Christian Church says “we are doing this for our people of Flaxmere
and Hastings. We have received lots of support in our efforts to make something of this market and are confident that it
will gather a huge following from the community.”
Flaxmere Councillor Henare O’Keefe says“Arthur and Moko have done an excellent job in getting everything together to
start the flea market. It’s something that Flaxmere needs and we are very excited about the value this will bring to the
community. The community applauds the hard work put in by Arthur, Moko and their team and for the ongoing support of the
Flaxmere Planning Committee and the Hastings District Council in helping make sure the market becomes a reality.”
Councillor Jacoby Poulain says, “the community driven Flaxmere Community Action Plan identifies the need to improve
economic opportunities and promote community pride and belonging in Flaxmere. The market is a great way of achieving
both these goals. It’s also fitting that the proceeds from the initial market will go to aid fellow New Zealanders who
continue to suffer from the devastation caused by the Christchurch earthquakes.”
The flea market will run from 6am to midday every Saturday
