Waikato DHB appoints new committee members
Waikato District Health Board (DHB) today confirmed the membership for its three statutory committees.
New committee members are Tureiti Moxon, Ken Price, Dr Paul Malpass, Prof Ross Lawrenson and Fungai Mhlanga. Reappointed
to committees were Wayne McLean, Janise Eketone, Robyn Klos, David Slone and John McIntosh.
Chair Graeme Milne, pictured, said a good widespread skill base was important in its committee membership.
The committees are:
* Community and Public Health Advisory Committee
* Disability Support Advisory Committee; and
* Health Waikato Advisory Committee
"It was important to us that we received applications from achievers from a range of backgrounds and expertise - and
from throughout the Waikato region," said Mr Milne.
"A good spread representation is not only important for the board, but more so for Waikato residents."
Mr Milne said he was aware there was a lack of rural expertise and representation and the appointments of Dr Malpass and
Prof Lawrenson would go a long way towards helping that.
Dr Malpass, from Taumarunui, has worked in the health sector for 35 years. He is well known nationally and regionally
for his work with DHBs and the Ministry of Health. He will bring comprehensive knowledge of the hospital and health
sector to the Health Waikato Advisory Committee as well as clinical experience and a good appreciation of rural health
issues.
Prof Lawrenson, pictured, is head of Waikato Clinical School and Professor of primary care. He is committed to the
provision of rural health and primary care, a passion he will bring to the Community and Public Health Advisory
Committee.
Mr Price, a retired partner of Hamilton accounting firm KPMG, wants to use his skills and experience to contribute more
to the community. He brings a strong base of financial and business experience to the Health Waikato Advisory Committee.
Mr Mhlanga, a health promoter for Hamilton Multicultural Services Trust, is a New Zealand citizen originally from
Zimbabwe. He wants both to make a difference in the provision of health services but also learn more about health as a
member of the Community and Public Health Advisory Committee.
Mrs Moxon, the Toiora Primary Health Organisation chief executive, is one of three Iwi Maori Council appointments to the
committees. The others are Mr McLean and Ms Eketone.
Six committee members have stood down. They include Peter Allan after nine years, Ardri Isbister, Rachael Dean, Eileen
Barker and Sue Wardill, after six years each, and Dr Annick Janson after a three year term.
While there were no statutory obligations around recruitment for committee membership, Mr Milne says the board places
great value on getting the right applicants from throughout the region, and that it greatly values the work done by
these committees.
The role of the Community and Public Health Advisory Committee is to advise the board on the health needs of the
region's population, and the funding and priorities required to address those needs. Meanwhile, the Disability Support
Advisory Committee advises the board on support requirements of Waikato people and advocates for those with
disabilities. These two committees will now run together chaired by Sally Christie.
Health Waikato Advisory Committee members advise the board on financial and operating performance of Health Waikato, and
on strategic issues relating to the provision of those.
