SAS Glass Recycling System Launch at WasteMINZ

Press Release –

SAS Glass Recycling System Launch at WasteMINZ

The innovative SAS Glass recycling was launched at the WasteMINZ workshop in Palmerston North on 14th April.

Working together for over 18 months three local entrepreneurs, Noel Burgess, Gary King and Andrew Slack have been developing a recycling system prototype that separates glass during collection keeping it separate from other recyclables for colour sorting. This allows for closed loop recycling where old bottles can be made into new bottles at O-I’s new furnace in Auckland.

Noel Burgess from Joels Group states “We have taken a total systems approach. Glass and other recycling is transferred from the two compartment bin to a two compartment vehicle to maximise the recovery and quality of all recycled material”

This project has been made possible from funding from the Glass Packaging Forum and Ministry for Science and Technology.

Gary King , from Mouldings Unlimited, developed the concept further producing designs in Ashhurst said “The breakthrough has been to use and retro-fit existing collection technology.” The prototype wheelie bins were manufactured using rotational moulding, which provides flexibility for developing new ideas.

The SAS Glass system prototype has reached the next stage and around 60 Ashhurst households trialled the SAS Glass bin this week. A questionnaire was given to the trial participants to get their feedback

Project Manager, Andrew Slack comments “The SAS Glass System has the dual advantage of being more convenient for the household and saving money in the overall recycling collection and sorting.” “Recyclables need to be viewed as resources and technologies to increase their value to communities have been begging for development. The SAS Glass system is one example, but we have others in the pipeline.”

The SAS Glass system will save time and money for Local Authorities in the long run in the collection of recycling improving quality at the same time.
