As at 11 am today the holiday road toll stands at 3.
At around 7 am this morning (27 December) there was a fatal, single car crash in Putere Road, Raupunga, Wairoa. A 17 year old female lost her life as a result of the collision. Police are carrying out investigations in relation to the crash.
The first road death of the holiday occurred on Christmas eve when a 44 year old female was killed when her vehicle left the road in Bush Road, Mosgiel. The driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle that left the road. Police had been looking for the driver of a second vehicle connected with the crash who has since been located.
The second tragedy of the holiday period occurred in the early hours of Christmas morning in Helvitia Road, Pukekohe. A 40 year old male pedestrian was killed when he was hit by a car just after midnight today. The vehicle left the scene and Police are urging the driver to come forward. Inquiries are continuing.
The official holiday road toll runs from 4pm on Friday 24 December 2010 until 6am Wednesday 5 January 2011. Last year 13 people lost their lives on the roads during the holiday period. At the same time last year there has only been one death recorded.
Please drive safely, we want every journey to be a safe journey for everyone.
