*/Boutique Hotel Sets Standard with Eco-Friendly Policies/*
A new ‘green’ hotel in Rotorua is setting industry standards with its strict environmental policies and plans to attract
the increasing international eco-tourism market.
Hamurana Lodge Boutique Hotel, which opened last year, has established a set of eco-friendly principles to follow
including the refusal to use any produce not grown in the region.
The practices of the Hotel have been formally acknowledged with the addition of the Qualmark-Silver Green accreditation
which recognises environmentally conscious tourism operators.
Hotel Director Fred Novella says the company’s policy of responsible tourism ensures their carbon footprint is reduced.
“From the recycling baskets in our guestrooms, to the compact fluorescent light bulbs throughout the lobbies, hallways
and guestrooms, as well as sensors or timers for areas of the hotels used less frequently, Hamurana Lodge is a ‘Green
Hotel’ with an environmentally friendly philosophy and practice,” says Novella.
“We are extremely proud of our position in the industry and our successes to date show that local and international
travellers alike are keen to experience luxury that doesn’t cost the earth – literally.”
Hamurana Lodge Boutique Hotel also has New Zealand’s first and only organic lodge restaurant which sources 100 percent
of its produce from the Bay of Plenty region, including the Hotel’s own organic vegetable and herb garden.
“We are obsessed with having the lowest carbon footprint possible and re-use and recycle wherever possible. We also
never, ever airfreight anything,” says Novella.
“Our green projects this year have included planting one hundred fruit trees and berries on the estate, making our own
organic honeycomb, raising organic free-range chickens and creating a native garden.”
