Helping to keep holiday makers safe during summer
Safer Christchurch, in partnership with ACC, will be helping visitors to Spencer Beach Holiday Park to stay safe during
the holiday period by distributing 800 summer safety packs at the camping ground.
From this week, holiday park staff will be giving Safer Christchurch Summer Safety Packs to people checking into the
camp as part of a pilot project. The packs include resources contributed by Safer Christchurch partners which the whole
family can use and enjoy during the summer. Some examples include an ACC activity book for children focussing on home
safety; fire safety tips from the New Zealand Fire Service and a CPR instruction booklet and sunscreen donated by St
John.
Safer Christchurch, which is chaired by Christchurch City Council, comprises 21 community organisations and government
agencies which aim to make Christchurch a safer place to live, work, play and learn.
Council Unit Manager Community Support Carolyn Gallagher says the aim of the packs is to give people ideas on keeping
safe while they are on holiday and are relaxed and receptive to the messages. “We want to encourage people to have an
enjoyable and safe holiday and the activity books included in the packs could be a life saver for parents if it rains!”
Spencer Beach Holiday Park Manager Andrea Cox says the camping ground is thrilled to be part of the project. “We usually
have 600 to 700 families staying at the camping ground during the Christmas and New Year period so it’s a perfect
opportunity to provide them with information on how to keep safe over this time, as they’re a captive audience. Our
guests’ safety is obviously of huge concern to us so this is just another way to remind them of all the things they can
do to look after themselves.”
