CCO appointments – do you have the right stuff?

Applications are being sought by the Wellington City Council for council controlled organisation (CCO) board directors
and trustees.
CCOs are entities that have been set up to independently manage Council facilities, or deliver specific services and
developments on behalf of Wellington residents.
Deputy Mayor Cr Ian McKinnon, Governance Portfolio Leader, says applications are open on a continuous basis throughout
the year; however, the Council is looking to encourage Wellingtonians with the right skills to apply.

and want to make a difference. We have an impressive talent pool in Wellington and we encourage people to apply!”
Wellington City Council appoints directors to remunerated positions on the following CCO boards: Capacity Infrastructure
Services Ltd, Partnership Wellington Trust (PWT), Wellington Cable Car Ltd, Wellington Museums Trust, St James Theatre
Charitable Trust / Wellington Venues Ltd and Wellington Zoo Trust. The Council also appoints directors to other entities
such as Wellington Regional Stadium Trust, Wellington International Airport Ltd and Karori Sanctuary Trust.
Submitted applications will be added to the Council’s candidate database, to be considered as vacancies arise. Typically
the Council considers candidates for between four and eight vacancies a year, though this can vary. Appointments are
usually for three years and may be renewed.
Mayor Celia Wade-Brown said the Council was casting its net wide for applicants, in keeping with its aim of keeping its
processes as open and inclusive as possible.
She said: “I would urge people to participate. We know there are many talented people in Wellington who would like to
give something back to the city.”
Board directors and trustees are selected and appointed based on the skills and requirements needed for each particular
board. Key criteria for selection include:
• senior executive (or similar) experience in governance
• knowledge of board director or trustee responsibilities
• an appreciation of CCO roles and their relationship with the Council
• being a Wellington resident with a keen interest in the city
• the ability to take a wide perspective on issues and think critically
• common sense, integrity and a strong sense of ethics
• knowledge relevant to the specific board opportunity.
