Auckland pays its respects to the victims of Pike River
The Mayor is inviting Aucklanders to join in a service of remembrance and condolence for those lost in the Pike River
The service will be inter-denominational and open to all members of the community. It will take place from 7pm Friday 3
December at Holy Trinity Cathedral, 446 Parnell Road, Parnell.
The service follows today’s national memorial to the 29 miners who lost their lives that will take place in Greymouth on
Len Brown is representing the people of Auckland at the service in Greymouth. “When it comes to events like Pike River,
we are all New Zealanders, we are all sons and daughters of Greymouth. It is simply a case of one community, Auckland,
supporting another community, the West Coast. That’s why I am here”, says the Mayor.
Auckland Council will help coordinate the Friday night event with church and civic leaders.
For those planning to take public transport to the event there are a number of regular bus services going through
Parnell, including the Link, and the nearest train station is Newmarket.
