No split, just healthy democracy says Church

Councillor Ross Church has moved quickly to reassure residents there is no “split” in the new Kapiti Coast District Council and that he is happy about the election of Roger Booth as Deputy Mayor.

“There’s a suggestion in some media circles that a split has occurred over the election of Deputy Mayor. Can I assure people that this is not the case.
“Two names went forward for consideration last night. Roger was voted in and I’m fine with that. That’s what democracy is all about.

“I do not see myself as a loser as a result. You only lose when you don’t stand up for your beliefs. You lose when you give up if you know you may not win. You lose when you do not give of your best.”

Mayor Jenny Rowan said she was disappointed a story was circulating which suggested a split.

“It’s a sign of a healthy democracy when people put their names forward for important positions. I whole heartedly encourage this. If votes go close to the wire, then that’s fine, but a close vote does not suggest a split.”
Ms Rowan said it was early days yet with the new Council.

“We have some very substantial issues to deal with in the near future, so we need to focus on the main game ahead of us.”
