Council donates $10,000 to Canterbury relief
fund
At its meeting today, the Kāpiti
Coast District Council agreed to contribute $10,000 to the
Christchurch relief fund.
“When we had the Paekakariki floods back in October 2003 people throughout New Zealand contributed to our community and sent message of support,” Mayor Jenny Rowan said.
“The Canterbury earthquake and the on-going after shocks which have hit that community – more than 400 so far – are the stuff of nightmares for us. I know our Emergency Management Team are determined to learn all they can from the Canterbury experience in case there is ever a need to apply that here.
“So far this Council has already sent two building inspectors to Canterbury to help with the assessment of the damage and the recovery programme. And I understand we are looking for other volunteers among the staff who may be able to help in the coming weeks and months.
“Not only will they be able to help but they will learn a great deal from the experience which they can bring back to aid our training for any similar emergency.
“However, we can do more and I’m very pleased this Council has today agreed to provide some support on behalf of our District by sending a donation of $10,000 to Canterbury.
“It’s the least we can do as a community,” Jenny Rowan said.
