Red Cross Announces New Area Council On West Coast

Red Cross Announces New Area Council On West Coast

New Zealand Red Cross West Coast area welcomes three people to its inaugural area council: Carol Keoghan and Janis Lennon from Westport, and John Stet from Hokitika.

All three have been members and volunteers for New Zealand Red Cross for many years.

• Carol Keoghan has been part of Red Cross for 30 years and has chaired the Buller branch for over ten years. In addition to her day job dairy farming with her husband, Neville, she’s been Westport Brownie leader for more than 35 years, helped with primary and high school enrolments, and music and dance competitions.

• Janis Lennon is a Safer Community Council coordinator for Buller, president of Westport North School Parent Group and a past-president of Plunket.

• John Stet has volunteered in emergency management activities including search and rescue. He also helps with traffic control for the Coast to Coast every year.

Sixteen new area councils have been set up this year as part of a major shift in the way New Zealand Red Cross operates at home. The changes are designed to give all New Zealand Red Cross members an equal voice and help develop programmes that address needs in Kiwi communities.

New Zealand Red Cross President Penny Mason says, “I am delighted to see an area council being established to lead and nurture Red Cross members and activities in on the West Coast. Previously the coast has been part of the Canterbury/West Coast region, but I believe it will flourish from having its own council which understands the unique challenges and opportunities on the coast. It also means this area will have a stronger voice at our National Council. I warmly welcome and congratulate Carol Keoghan, Janis Lennon and John Stet.”

Another new Red Cross event on the West Coast is the moving if its Service Centre to a new location at 100 Tainui St, Greymouth, phone 768 5945. Call in or phone for all your first aid requirements or if you are interested in joining the Red Cross Emergency Response Team. The team meets once a fortnight and the next meeting is 28 July at 6.30pm.
