Arrest Made Over Gecko Thefts

Whangarei Police have arrested a person in relation to the theft of a number of Geckos taken from two separate locations in Northland over the past ten days.

The arrest relates to burglaries that occurred at the Whangarei Museum on 28-29/06/10 during which seven 'Forest' Gecko's were stolen, and Ti Point Reptile Park, Warkworth, on 27/06/10 in which 16 'Green' Geckos were taken.

A Search Warrant was executed at a rural address west of Whangarei today, during which at least 15 Gecko's were recovered.

The investigation in this case utilised a co-ordinated approach involving numerous Government agencies, including NZ Police, NZ Customs, NZ Wildlife and the Department of Conservation (DOC).

The recovered Geckos are currently in the safe custody of DOC staff, receiving the necessary care and attention.

The mentioned Government agencies would like to take this opportunity to thank members of the public who have assisted during the investigation.

An unemployed male aged 19 years, from Whangarei, will be appearing in the Whangarei District Court on 07/07/10, facing two charges of Burglary.
