City Council big winners on world environment day

Press Release

Palmerston North City Council big winners on world environment day

Palmerston North City Council was a big winner on World Environment Day after receiving a Green Ribbon Award from the Minister for the Environment on World Environment for the category - Public Sector Stepping Up.

The award was great recognition for the Awapuni Sustainable Development Centre (ASDC) that opened in 2007 when the last landfill closed and waste had to be transported out of the city.

Recyclables including, paper, cardboard, bottles and cans, green waste and food waste, waste wood, liquid waste and other materials are all reprocessed and put to good use, with the majority of the materials collected being reused within New Zealand. To date more than 6,000 tonnes of recyclables have been recovered and a new target of 75% diversion from landfill by 2015 has been included in the new waste minimisation plan.

Supporting onshore-based recycling means paper and cardboard is sent to Carter Holt Harvey mills, and plastics are supplied to plastic recyclers based within the region. These companies make value added products and create local job opportunities at the same time.

We are proud to be associated with this project said Andrew Slack, Director of TBL Solutions Ltd who has been working in partnership with PNCC. This is great recognition for the council team who have worked tirelessly to ensure what could have been an ongoing liability into a fantastic asset. It is great to be involved with a local authority that is taking a lead and showing the way.
