Flooding And Slips In Whakatane

Police, fire service and council workers are continuing to clear slips and assist motorists caught in flooding in the Whakatane area.

Rain has stopped for the moment giving some respite.

Shortly before midnight there were concerns that the Whakatane River might breach and preparations were made to evacuate some residents in the Douglas Street area. The War Memorial Hall has been opened as an evacuation centre and will remain open throughout the night in case it is required.

A slip on George Road, Whakatane will not be cleared until morning and motorists are being directed onto Hillcrest Road.

Several slips were reported in the Matata area however roads are reported to be passable with care.
