High Calibre of Cycle Trail applications

The Ministry of Tourism’s Cycle Trail team has received 53 funding proposals for Phase 2 of Nga Haerenga, The New
Zealand Cycle Trail project - a number that promises to keep the assessment team busy over the Christmas break.
Programme Manager, John Dunn, says applications closed on 18 December with proposals arriving from across the country.
“I am extremely pleased with both the diversity of the Concept proposals and their quality,” says Mr Dunn.
“I’ve only had a quick glance through them but they look exciting and are generally of a high calibre.”
Mr Dunn says they are looking for cycle trails that will become part of a series of ‘Great Rides’ and will showcase New
Zealand’s iconic attractions. The proposals must demonstrate that, among other things, they will attract cyclists, have
regional and international appeal and are fully supported by communities.
“Because of the diversity of our country, the proposals are all different providing a snapshot of the regions early
history and unique beauty – whether it is stunning coastal vistas, breathtaking mountains or wild, native bush.
“By the time the Phase 2 trails and the Quick Start projects are built, we will have more than 1000 kilometres of safe,
off-road trails for cyclists – a huge draw-card for international tourists.”
Meanwhile Mr Dunn says the Technical Assessment Group’s short listing of applicants through to the next stage of the
funding process will not be easy because of the large number and high quality of the proposals.
“We hope to make a decision about which proposals go through to feasibility sometime in February.”
