Pride of Canterbury selected in national U19 team
Canterbury, the new national under-19 cricket crown holder, will have four reps in the national team for the ICC U19
Cricket World Cup in January.
Dual age-group international Logan van Beek; Tom Latham, a son of long-serving Canterbury player and BLACKCAP Rod
Latham; Corey Anderson, the youngest player in New Zealand first-class cricket history to gain a contract; and
East-Shirley’s Tim Johnston were named in the national side after Canterbury captured the U19 crown for the fifth time
last Sunday.
Van Beek, grandson of former double international cricketer Sam Guillen, also played for New Zealand Junior Tall Blacks
at the Fiba world under-19 tournament in July.
Christchurch will be the headquarters when the world’s premier youth cricket event starts on 10 January, 2010. Other
group matches will be held in Queenstown and Palmerston North. The group matches will decide which top eight teams will
contest the Super League title in Christchurch and which eight teams will travel to Napier to contest the Plate
competition.
“It is thrilling to see that we have top representation in the national team and we, as a city, are inspired by the
achievements of these young men,” says John Filsell, Manager, Recreation & Sports, with the Christchurch City Council.
“I believe it will inspire a new generation of cricket players in Christchurch and a new generation of cricket fans,”
says Mr Filsell. “Those who will take part in the event are assured of true camaraderie, of renewing long friendships
from across the world, making some new ones because we have a tradition of being excellent hosts and, more importantly,
excellent competitors.”
“The youth world cup will lay a solid foundation for further development of cricket in Christchurch,” he says.
The New Zealand squad will play a three-match warm-up series against Pakistan in Blenheim from January 3-7 before the
U19 CWC is officially opened on January 10. Group matches begin 19 January in Christchurch (two groups), Queenstown and
Palmerston North (one group each).

Age: 19 years
Batting: Right-hand bat
Bowling: Right-arm offbreak
Was a member of the Canterbury team that won the U17 national championship. Cricket heroes include Brendon McCullum and
Graham Swann.
wicketkeeper
Age: 17 years
Batting: Left-hand bat
Bowling: Right-arm medium
Son of former Canterbury player and BLACKCAP Rod Latham. Made the New Zealand U19 side last season and was top scorer on
their north Island tour. Cricket heroes include Adam Gilchrist and Sachin Tendulkar.
Age: 19 years
Batting: Right-hand bat
Bowling: Right-arm fast
A double international who has played age group Basketball for New Zealand. He is a grandson of Simpson (Sammy) Guillen,
who played cricket for both the West Indies and New Zealand in the 1950s. Cricket heroes include his grandfather and
