Lantern Spectacular draws a big crowd
Saturday night’s Community Trust Lantern Spectacular set the Summer in Nelson programme off to a flying start with a crowd estimated at 4,000 – about the same as last year.
Organiser Cynthia Lorrian said the event is one that really shows the strength of the Nelson community.
“The different theatrical acts on the way up the hill get strangers talking to each other and you see some really joyous interactions,” she said. “It was wonderful this year to see the creative effort people had put into their lanterns and even into dressing up.
Cynthia said the more sustainable approach with acoustic music and no generators had gone very well: “With solar powered lights and a choir at the bottom of the hill, going ‘green’ actually enhanced the event.”
Summer in Nelson continues right through until the end of February. The next big event is the Trafalgar Square countdown on New Year’s Even.
Summer in Nelson is produced by the Nelson City Council as a celebration for locals and an added attraction for visitors. Programme booklets are available at council offices, libraries and visitor centres throughout the region, and the information is on the website at wwwnelsonfestivals.co.nz
