Parihaka residents to participate in Climate Camp
Date: 13th December 2009 – For immediate release
From: Climate Camp Aotearoa
Several Parihaka residents are traveling to the Wellington region this
week to participate in Aotearoa's first big Climate Camp.
“While police target the thousands of protesters and politicians fail to address climate change effectively in Copenhagen this week, the Climate Camp in Aotearoa will be an example of a sustainable temporary eco village using a horizontal organising structure to develop real solutions to climate change“ explains Climate Camp participant Emily Bailey.
“Heaps of free workshops will be offered from permaculture gardening to
discussions about class and ecology, tino rangatiratanga, social justice
and carbon trading. The camp will culminate in a Day of Action on 21st
December in central Wellington where we will take direct action together against the false solutions
to climate change such as carbon trading and taxing the poor.“
“Climate Camp is about building a people's movement to address the root
causes of climate change“ says Bailey. “Just like Tohu Kakahi and Te Whiti
o Rongomai and the people of Parihaka resisted against the confiscation of
land in the 19th century, it is now time for all of us to get together
to protect those who will be affected by climate change.“
The camp starts on 16th December 2009 in Moonshine Park, Trentham, Upper
Hutt. See www.climatecamp.org.nz for directions and more information.
