Water Restrictions – Mosgiel
Dunedin (Monday, 23 November) - The Dunedin City Council has advised that level two water restrictions will come into
effect from Tuesday 24 November in Mosgiel, Braeside, Kinmont Park and East Taieri, until further notice.
The water restrictions are necessary to relive pressure on the area’s water supply, currently sourced from Mount Grand.
The consented daily water take for the Mosgiel area is 7600 m3, and current daily consumption is 8800 m3 per day. The
highest demand in the Mosgiel area for water this time last year was 5500 m3 per day.
Based on this current daily demand the water usage in Mosgiel is 880 litres per person per day. The rest of Dunedin
(excluding the Mosgiel area) is currently 505 litres per person per day.
Due to this increase in water usage in the Mosgiel area, the DCC is finding it difficult to maintain fire fighting
storage capacity in the Wingatui reservoir. The extra demand has also resulted in some houses in Mosgiel running out of
water.
Level two restrictions mean handheld hosing only is permitted in the areas stated above, and only between 8.00pm and
8.00am. This includes the hosing of domestic vehicles.
Metered customers in the restricted area may continue to use handheld hoses during the day and sprinkler systems at
night from 8.00pm to 8.00am but must use restraint.
Water usage in the rest of the city is not restricted at this stage and, if all residents are restrained in their water
usage, such water restrictions may be avoided in the coming weeks.
