Title: New director of OFCANZ appointed
Detective Superintendent Malcolm Burgess has been provisionally appointed as the Director of the Organised & Financial Crime Agency of New Zealand (OFCANZ).
Commissioner Howard Broad says Mr Burgess has an outstanding investigation profile within the NZ Police.
"Malcolm is a top flight investigator and an experienced manager. OFCANZ will benefit enormously from having someone of
his calibre at the helm," Mr Broad said.
Mr Burgess has been a member of police for 33 years. He began his career in Auckland in 1976 where he joined the CIB and
worked for 11 years. He went on to hold various positions including Area Commander and Crime Manager in Nelson and Area
Commander of Hamilton City. In 2002 he was promoted to Detective Superintendent and held an overview of crime issues for
the South Island.
Awarded the MNZM in 2009 for services to policing, Mr Burgess has extensive experience in leading serious and complex
crime investigations.
Mr Burgess says he is excited by the challenge of leading the fight against organised crime in New Zealand.
"The multi-disciplinary task-force approach that OFCANZ is operating has huge potential to knock over those criminals
causing the most harm to our communities."
Mr Burgess says his new job is every detective's dream.
"To have the time, space and resources to focus on going after top-end criminals is a fantastic opportunity."
OFCANZ was established on 1 July 2008, and is a hosted agency within New Zealand Police. The agency's mandate is to
disrupt and dismantle organised crime.
Mr Burgess will take up his role immediately.
