New project website for the Western Link

With major developments in the design of the Western Link over the past few months a new website has been created to show the new designs for the road and for the intersections along its length.

“It’s a major step forward in our communication with the community about the Western Link,” Mayor Jenny Rowan said today.

“The site uses technology which lets the viewer scroll across a map of the Western Link route and to view enlarged and detailed plans of the proposed intersection designs and to see the way proposed landscaping will work.

“The design now is very much based on urban design principles rather than using a straight engineering approach. This means the proposed road and associated cycleways, walkways and bridleways curve, rise and dip in sympathy with the landscape rather than cutting through dunes and over wetlands.

“We recently changed the name from the Western Link Road to simply the Western Link because it is more than just a road as it incorporates pedestrian, cycling and horse riding elements,

“The 100 metre wide designation is retained and the road itself uses only what is needed for a two-lane approach. The surrounding green areas are used very imaginatively in the management of stormwater and run off from the road as well as providing pedestrians, cyclists and riders with a high quality environment and experience.”

Future proofing of the link is managed by retaining the full corridor of the designation.

The site also reviews the history of the Western Link from the initial idea of a Wellington to Foxton Motorway back in 1954 to its current design as a high quality local linking road.
