An Aquarium in the Sky
A goldfish bigger than a shark? Life-sized cows floating in the sky, surrounded by stingrays, octopuses, cuttlefish?
Catch them all at the Tip Top Kite Day on this Sunday in the “An Aquarium in the Sky” display.
New to Kite Day is Jeltje Baas from the Netherlands, who will be showcasing her life-sized artistically painted cow
kites at the Kite Day in New Brighton, alongside giant (10 metre plus) 3D inflatables of sea life.
Ms Baas, a painter from East Region on the Frisian-Dutch border, loves the New Zealand landscape (which she has painted
frequently) and loves painting cows, says Julie Adam, the Kite Lady, coordinator of Tip Top Kite Day. The painter is
expected in Christchurch just before Kite Day and will fly several kites painted with cows.
The ever-popular Peter Lynn team from Ashburton will be fielding their giant show kites - crab, goldfish, cuttlefish,
ray, dolphin and octopus – from their exhibition at the Nelson Kite Festival, where they encountered four seasons in a
day. Other regulars include fliers from the United Kingdom and from around New Zealand.
More than 6000 caught the Kite Day last year and we are expecting more this year with the last part of the Buskers
Festival being held in New Brighton on the same day, says Ms Adam.
“And if the great weather holds, we can promise a sensational time on the beach,” she says. Ms Adam is the owner of the
Skylines and Bylines - the KiteShop, which will showcase its spectacular range of kites at Kite Day.
