Christchurch’s cycleways a great day out for holiday fun.
Parents and families are encouraged to get some mileage under their belts over the holiday period.
Whether you’re an experienced downhill mountain biker or a family out for the day, Christchurch has got a track that
will suit nearly any style or pace.
“It’s the perfect time to take the entire family out and explore the great cycleways and tracks we have here in
Christchurch,” says Christchurch City Council’s Planner for Cycling and Pedestrians Michael Ferigo.
The McLeans Forest Ride and Bottle Lake Forest Park trails are two gentle rides on mostly flat land through pine forests
suitable for all ages, with the option to take the full trail or a shorter path.
“Most of our tracks were developed by either ECan or the Council so they are safe, well marked, and monitored for
hazards. They were made with the intention for family use.”
The Council’s ‘Christchurch City Cycling’ website is a helpful and handy way to find new bike tracks and rides for
different levels.
Listed with easy to more difficult trails, fun BMX tracks and daring downhill mountain biking tracks, heading off-road
over the holiday period will be a must-do activity.
“We want to make cycling in Christchurch an enjoyable experience so we give specific hints and tips for each trail and
detailed routes to follow,” says Ferigo.
The Christchurch City Cycling site details track maps and descriptions, distances and difficulty levels as well as
regular updates on track safety.
“Some of the tracks off the Bottle Lake Forest Park trail are shared with horses and pedestrians so we ask cyclists to
be respectful and give way to other users.
“Safety is key to an enjoyable day. We encourage people to check the website before heading out on a ride to look at the
maps, check water and toilet availability and estimated ride times. ”
The Council also suggests telling a friend or relative which track you are intending to ride if you are heading out
solo.
