Safety First Approach For Kapiti Coast Beaches And Parks

Recreational users of Kapiti Coast's beaches and parks are being reminded to respect the safety of others when they're
enjoying the region's coastal attractions.
The sweeping 34km coastline, beaches, great fishing grounds and expansive parks are popular throughout the year but more
so in summer when thousands of local people and holidaymakers make the most of the outdoor opportunities.
Complaints of speeding vehicles on beaches and parks, over-fishing or taking under-sized catches and people exercising
their dogs outside designated areas have prompted an inter-agency awareness campaign this Saturday involving Kapiti
Coast District Council, Police, security staff, Greater Wellington park rangers and Fisheries Officers.
"It's the irresponsible actions and attitudes of a few people, especially motorbike riders who use the beaches and parks
as a race track, that creates some safety issues for people, especially families with young children," says Clive Puna,
Wellington Police Iwi Liaison Officer.
"Beaches and parks are not main highways. Riders and drivers need to stick to the proper areas which are all signposted.
Even when you're on beach access roads, remember to keep your speeds down and be aware of other users."
Ken Smith, Regulatory Manager for Kapiti Coast District Council, said the beach operation is timed to coincide with the
end of the school year and the lead up to summer holidays.
"This is an opportunity for all agencies to work together in an educative and compliance operation," he said. "It's a
chance for us to make people more aware of local bylaws, where they can drive, ride their trail or quad bikes, fish or
exercise their dogs.
"Our beaches, parks and fishing grounds are second to none. We want everyone to safely enjoy what the Kapiti Coast has
to offer."
