UK artists close downtown street next Sunday
Stout Street will be closed on Sunday 14 December at the hands of UK artists Heather and Ivan Morison. Their new work
will be the latest instalment of the year-long One Day Sculpture series.
The exact details of the one day sculpture will not be revealed until the day – so weekend shoppers are encouraged to go
along to the intersection of Lambton Quay and Stout Street and see it for themselves.
The Curatorial Director for the One Day Sculpture series, Claire Doherty, says the two artists are accustomed to
creating remarkable public sculptures and interventions.
“In summer 2006, I commissioned an artwork by the Morisons which involved the simulation of an articulated lorry-crash
in Bristol, where the lorry’s load of 25,000 flowers were spilled across the city centre. The work provoked
extraordinary conversations amongst the public about whether this work was a contemporary monument, sculpture or
protest. And as the flowers were taken home on buses, bicycles and prams at sun-down, the work was dispersed, entering
urban myth.”
Flowers are not the focus of this new work, however. The artists’ recent work has taken a darker turn to concerns about
our environmental future, and their work for Wellington is expected to be more apocalyptic in tone.
All One Day Sculpture projects last for no more than 24 hours, and the earliest of risers will be able to see the work
as soon as day breaks on Sunday The work will be dismantled and cleared by the following Monday morning’s commuter rush.
One Day Sculpture is a Massey University College of Creative Arts, School of Fine Arts, Litmus Research Initiative. It
is supported by Wellington City Council’s Public Art Panel, and presented in partnership with many other art galleries
and organisations throughout the country. Wellington will have seven more temporary sculptures taking place over the
