Free wheelin’ fun on Wellington waterfront
The Council is encouraging cyclists of all ages and abilities to get on their bikes and explore the Capital’s beautiful coastline when the annual Lion Foundation Bike the Bays takes place on Sunday 14 December.
The popular free event is expected to attract more than 1500 cyclists and will feature three different rides – all departing from Waitangi Park.
At 9am accomplished cyclists can embark on the 26km return ride to Scorching Bay. Those looking for a more leisurely jaunt can opt for either the 10km return ride to Evans Bay Marina at 9.30am, or the 3km return ride to Queens Wharf which leaves at 10am.
There will be some traffic restrictions in place for the Scorching Bay and Evens Bay Marina rides, but cyclists should follow road rules at all times. However the Queens Wharf circuit stays on the traffic-free waterfront shared path, so this ride is suitable for cyclists of all ages and is even open to trikes.
Mayor Kerry Prendergast says the event is the perfect opportunity to get out and enjoy our beautiful waterfront while also getting some exercise.

“Bike the Bays is a fantastic event for the whole family. Cyclists will be dressed up in all sorts of outrageous outfits and once everyone has cooled down after their rides they can enjoy a picnic lunch in Waitangi Park with food stalls, spot prizes and live music.”
Cyclists are encouraged to register for Bike the Bays online at www.feelinggreat.co.nz – everyone who registers will go in the draw to win an Avanti mountain bike.
There’s no need to panic if you don’t register though – you can still turn up on the day with your bike 30 minutes prior to your start time. Don’t forget to bring your water bottle, sunscreen and a helmet.
