New Horse Trail Alongside Pathway

A new horse trail has been developed by Hawke’s Bay Regional Council alongside the Rotary pathway between the Clive
River boat ramp and River Road on the Tukituki River.
The idea came from horsewoman, Nicky Ross, who saw the opportunity for a good long trail for horses and riders to enjoy
along river areas and the coast.
“It’s wonderful to have the ability to access these areas. The implementation of this horse trail is a wonderful start
to providing safe areas for horse riders of all ages,” said Nicky.
“The regional council has been very helpful and proactive in making this happen. Without these areas riders are left
with very few options for riding, sometimes resorting to riding on the roads which can be extremely dangerous.
“Hawke’s Bay has a large equestrian following which will only increase with the Horse of the Year being based here.
Providing riding areas is another drawcard for people to come to this area. It is wonderful to see people out enjoying
the outdoors whether it be by foot, bicycle or horse.”
She says there’s still some clearing of rubbish and earthworks to be done, but once that is finished it will be a
pleasant, safe place to ride.
Regional Council Operations engineering officer Vince Byrne says the 14 km trail was completed over 2 months. Signs will
be going up to mark the trail over next few weeks and a trail ‘map’ with pictures will be put on the Regional Council’s
website.
Ms Ross says riders will need to consider other pathway users, such as clearing horse manure from carparks and being
courteous to cyclists and walkers when passing them.
A BMX track at Clive near the boat ramp has also been completed and is already being enjoyed by crowds of youngsters.
In another river berm development, Council staff are working with the HB Motor Cycle Club on a Motocross track planned
for Council land near Mere Road off SH 50. A resource consent application is underway.
