Football fever hits town
Check out the fast and furious action of Urban Streetball – the football craze sweeping the world – at Nuffield Street
in Newmarket on 25 October as part of the football festivities happening around the city in support of the FIFA U-17
Women’s World Cup.
Auckland City Council is running the Urban Streetball tournament from noon until 4pm where teams of two battle it out in
a small playing area – 6m by 12m – in a game which forces players to use skill and speed to score goals.
Hot local band The Electric Confectionaries are performing live and there are chances to win prizes.
“Urban Streetball is a fantastic spectator event and a chance for players to have fun and showcase football at street
level”, says Councillor Greg Moyle, chairperson of the Arts, Culture and Recreation Committee.
“This is a great opportunity for Aucklanders to be a part of the excitement leading up to the FIFA U-17 Women’s World
Cup at North Harbour Stadium”.
Sixteen teams from around the world are competing in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup with the first game kicking off on
Tuesday, 28 October when New Zealand’s Young Football Ferns take on Canada at North Harbour Stadium. The tournament runs
until 16 November and has an estimated worldwide TV audience of over 125 million.
