Bridge span to be demolished tonight

Bridge span to be demolished tonight
The NZ Transport Agency will demolish a span of the old Onewa Road on-ramp bridge tonight after it was struck by a digger on a truck this morning.
“The southbound lanes will be closed from 8pm until approximately midday tomorrow between Northcote Road off-ramp and Onewa Road on-ramp to enable the span of the bridge over the motorway to be demolished,” says acting regional manager Tommy Parker.
The motorway is temporarily open at the moment but the NZTA recommends motorists avoid the area tonight and tomorrow morning and take the Upper Harbour Motorway (SH18) and Northwestern Motorway (SH16) as alternative routes.
The old bridge was hit earlier today by a digger on top of a truck, temporarily closing the southbound lanes. Whilst the bridge has been made safe for traffic to travel under, the safest option is to remove the damaged span as quickly as possible.
The bridge was not in use at the time of the strike and is being demolished as part of the Onewa Road Interchange upgrade.
The new southbound on-ramp at Onewa Road and buses using the busway are unaffected.
