Motorists: steer clear of Moorefield Road
Motorists are warned to steer clear of Moorefield Road – the main route between Johnsonville and Khandallah – during
busy periods from next Monday 22 September due to essential roadworks.
City Council contractors are to build a 30-metre long retaining wall beside Moorefield Road, just south of the busy
Broderick Road intersection. The work will require Moorefield Road to be temporarily narrowed for about six weeks to
make room for construction machinery.
As a result, the right-turn lane into Broderick Road for northbound traffic from Khandallah will be closed between 9am
and 3pm weekdays while work is under way.
Traffic heading for the Johnsonville Mall and other local stores will have to enter further north on Moorefield Road
near the Countdown supermarket, while traffic wanting to use Broderick Road will have to go the ‘long way’ via the main
Johnsonville roundabout and Johnsonville Road.
Speed reductions to 30 kmh around the construction site, coupled with temporary changes in the phasing of the
Broderick-Moorefield traffic lights, mean motorists can expect delays.
Council Infrastructure Director Stavros Michael says the retaining wall project has to be done sooner rather than later
because there is a danger of subsidence of Moorefield Road if the slope above the adjacent rail line gives way.
He urges motorists to take alternative routes through Johnsonville if they want to avoid delays.
“We apologise to motorists – however we have to do this work as soon as practically possible. Unfortunately there is not
enough room at the site to allow traffic to flow normally while work is under way so we hope motorists will bear with
us.”
