Mayor Banks expresses sympathy and shock
"I am deeply saddened, shocked and disillusioned at the senseless killing of the South Auckland Police Officer", said Hon. John Banks, Mayor of Auckland City.
"We live in times of social dislocation and lawlessness, driven by the breakdown of family values and standards, and fuelled by alcohol and drugs. Forgive me for struggling to come to grips with what is happening to our country."
Mr Banks said the ruthless killing of the police officer represents the mindset of a few that have got away with too much for too long.
"We need to look to ourselves and in unison, condemn everything that is wrong, so we can teach our children what is right. My heartfelt sympathy to the family of the slain police officer", concluded Mr Banks.
