Speed limits to better match drivers’ habits
Speed limit changes will come into effect on Happy Valley Road and Ohiro Road, Hutt Road and Takapu Road from 18
September.
Over the last few years, there have been a significant number of requests from residents, schools and businesses in the
Owhiro Bay, Hutt Road and Takapu Road areas for a reduction in speed limits.
The Council’s Associate Transport and Urban Development Portfolio Leader, Councillor Hayley Wain, says the new speed
limits will make our roads safer, and better reflect the actual speed the majority of people already travel on these
roads.
“The proposal to lower the speed limits on these roads went out for public consultation earlier in the year, and the
vast majority of respondents favoured the proposal,” says Cr Wain.
The Council has recommended to the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) that it approve a lower limit on Centennial
Highway between the Hutt Road and the bottom of Ngauranga Gorge and a lower limit on the Tawa interchange. The NZTA
board will consider these changes later this year.
The speed limits as of Thursday 18 September are:
Sections of Happy Valley Road being reduced from 70kmh to 50kmh
Hutt Road from 100kmh to 80kmh and from 70kmh to 60kmh
Takapu Road from 100kmh to 70kmh.
