Get ready to Dance Your Socks Off!
Pull on your dancing shoes and get ready to shake your funky thing! Wellington City Council’s ever-popular Dance Your
Socks Off! Festival is back again with performances and workshops to get you tapping your feet, clapping your hands and
coming back for more.
More than 25,000 people attended last year’s festival and this one is set to be just as big. A host of dancers and
choreographers from New Zealand and all over the world will arrive in the capital to dance their socks off and many of
these events are free of charge.
If you’re interested in the festival but don’t know where to start, then the Reading Courtenay Dance Fest is for you.
You can get a free sample of what’s on offer with performances from some of the festival’s top dancers – come along to
the ground floor of Reading Courtenay on Monday 1 September and check it out.
Council Community Recreation Programmer Leanne Parsons says this year’s festival has something for everyone. “Whether
you’re into flamenco, rock and roll, hip hop or Brazilian samba, there’s something to get everyone up and dancing,” she
says.
Wellington lovers of all things retro will be thrilled to hear the Roller Disco is back again at Kilbirnie Recreation
Centre on Saturday 13 September. One of the most popular events at last year’s festival, the Roller Disco will feature
Radio Active’s DJ Liam Luff spinning some classic funk and disco tunes to keep skaters rolling to the beat all night
long.
“There’s a special focus on kids too – there are children’s sessions for hip hop, ballet and jazz, as well as a special
dress-up-and-dance event for very little ones,” says Leanne.
The festival has a strong focus on participation and there are lots of great dance workshops on offer for anyone keen to
learn some new dance moves.
