70 extra parking spaces for growing biker population
About 70 new parking spaces for motorcycles and scooters are to be provided at a number of locations across central Wellington. The new motorcycle parks will be on Cable, Jessie, Marion, Tennyson, Victoria and Wakefield streets.
Councillor Andy Foster, the Council’s Transport and Urban Development Portfolio Leader, says the Council has been listening to the local motorcycling community and working to relieve the pressure on existing bike and scooter parking in the city.
“For some time motorcyclists have been finding it increasingly difficult to find parking spots – especially in the CBD. We’ve seen an increase in parking on footpaths which makes life difficult for many pedestrians. In the past few months we’ve seen a significant increase in the number of people using motorcycles. With fuel prices now high, more and more residents have been turning to motorcycles and scooters as a relatively fuel and cost-efficient way of getting around the city.
“Until now our parking facilities hadn’t kept pace with the increase in motorcycle usage. We are confident these new parking spots will meet the demand for motorcycle parking in the central city for the present. Increased use of motorcycles and scooters will also reduce the number of cars commuting to the CBD – leading to reduced congestion during peak traffic periods.”
