Additional funding for cleaner streets
Street cleaning in twelve Auckland suburbs is to receive a boost after Auckland City Council approved an additional
$465,000 to extend street cleaning orderly services.
Street orderlies are currently deployed in 25 town centre locations across the city, collecting loose litter, emptying
rubbish bins, reporting graffiti, and servicing public toilets and street furniture.
The extra funding will supplement these services in Onehunga, Remuera, Glen Innes, Otahuhu, Mt Albert and Panmure town
centres – and provide a street cleaning orderly service for the first time for town centres in Ellerslie, Mission Bay,
St Heliers, Mt Roskill, Balmoral and Mt Eden Village.
“Streets are generally cleaned outside normal business hours, often in the early hours of the morning to provide easier
access and minimise disruptions to the public,” says chairperson of the council’s Arts, Culture and Recreation
Committee, Councillor Greg Moyle.
“But as our city evolves and daytime activity increases, some locations require additional cleaning. Employing foot
orderlies in town centre locations will ensure that good standards of cleanliness are maintained during the busy daytime
period,” he says.
The town centres selected to receive the extra service were assessed with input from community boards on such factors as
their current state, current use and future plans for the centre.
