Wellington to host a series of 24-hour artworks
New Zealand will be awash with more than twenty new sculptures throughout the next year, but none of them will last
longer than a day.
One Day Sculpture, a year-long series of temporary public artworks, will kick off on 28 August at Breaker Bay, with
Maddie Leach's Perigree #11. Using mathematician Ken Ring's long-range weather forecasting technique, Maddie Leach
invites everyone to an isolated boatshed in Breaker Bay to experience the downpours, hail, wind and rain Ring has
predicted for that day.
The Council's Arts and Culture Portfolio Leader, Councillor Ray Ahipene-Mercer, says the Council is proud to support the
series through its public art fund.
"These are the kind of artworks that really get people thinking about public space and the places they travel through
every day," says Cr Mercer.
"If you are anywhere near Haining Street on the last day of this month, you should pop by no.10 to check out
Wellington's second one-day sculpture," he says.
"New Zealand artist Kah Bee Chow is creating an entire commemorative garden to a Chinese immigrant who was shot dead on
that street just over 100 years ago. This is a great chance to catch a glimpse of the area's history as Wellington's
Chinatown."
One Day Sculpture is a Massey University College of Creative Arts, School of Fine Arts, Litmus Research Initiative. It
is supported by the Council's Public Art Panel, and presented in partnership with many other art galleries and
organisations throughout the country.
The Wellington commissioning galleries are Te Papa, City Gallery, Enjoy, Adam Art Gallery and Litmus Research
Initiative.
Wellington will have nine more of these temporary sculptures taking place over the next year. Check out
